Cities in Japan
Japan travel guide
By the Odysseus team · Reviewed October 2026
Japan blends huge, orderly cities with temples, onsen and outstanding food at every price point. It is more affordable than people think if transport and accommodation are planned well.
When to go
Late March to early April (cherry blossom) and mid-October to late November (autumn colours) are the most beautiful seasons and the busiest. Avoid Golden Week (late April to early May) and Obon (mid-August), when the whole country travels. June is rainy season and summer is hot and humid.
How much it costs
- Backpacker: €70–95 a day (hostel or capsule, konbini and ramen, local transport).
- Mid-range: €150–220 a day (business hotel or simple ryokan, some shinkansen, entry fees).
- High-end: €350+ a day (ryokan with kaiseki dinner, design hotels).
Suggested 14-day route
Tokyo (4 days) → Hakone (1 day) → Kyoto (4 days, with a Nara day trip) → Osaka (2 days) → Hiroshima and Miyajima (2 days) → shinkansen back to Tokyo (1 day). Since its price rise, the Japan Rail Pass rarely pays off on this route: compare with single tickets first.
Practical tips
- Check the visa-exemption rules for your passport before booking.
- Load an IC card (Suica or Pasmo) on your phone for metro, buses and konbini.
- Carry some cash: many temples and small restaurants don't take cards.
- Tipping is not customary and can cause awkwardness.
- Book Kyoto and Hakone ryokan early in peak season.
Indicative prices per person per day, excluding flights. Always check current entry requirements before travelling.
