Croatia travel guide

By the Odysseus team · Reviewed October 2026

Croatia is the Adriatic coast at its purest: walled cities, more than a thousand islands, waterfall national parks and crystal-clear sea, with the euro and Schengen membership.

When to go

May, June and September are the best months: warm sea, frequent ferries and fewer crowds than in July and August, when Dubrovnik and Hvar fill up and prices rise. Plitvice is spectacular in spring, when the waterfalls carry more water.

How much it costs

  • Backpacker: €60–80 a day.
  • Mid-range: €120–180 a day.
  • High-end: €300+ a day (Dubrovnik and Hvar are the priciest).

Suggested 9-day route

Zagreb (1 day) → Plitvice Lakes (1 day) → Zadar (1 day) → Split (2 days, with a Krka trip) → Hvar or Brač (2 days) → Dubrovnik (2 days). Catamarans link Split, the islands and Dubrovnik; a rental car makes the Plitvice and Zadar leg easier.

Practical tips

  • Buy Plitvice tickets online and early in summer: entry is capped by time slot.
  • Walk Dubrovnik's walls at opening time or sunset.
  • Many beaches are pebbly: water shoes help a lot.

Indicative prices per person per day, excluding flights. Always check current entry requirements before travelling.
