Greece is history in Athens and sea across its 200-plus inhabited islands. Choosing the right islands and season is the difference between a perfect holiday and August ferry queues.
When to go
May, June, September and early October: warm sea, frequent ferries and fairer prices than July and August, when Santorini and Mykonos are packed. From November to March many small islands cut back hotels and connections.
How much it costs
- Backpacker: €55–75 a day.
- Mid-range: €110–170 a day.
- High-end: €300+ a day (much more on Santorini and Mykonos).
Accommodation charges a nightly tax that is higher in peak season.
Suggested 10-day route
Athens (2 days) → Naxos (3 days) → Santorini (2 days) → Milos or Paros (2 days) → back to Athens (1 day). Naxos and Paros offer beaches, villages and excellent food at better prices than Santorini.
Practical tips
- In summer book ferries ahead; fast boats cost more and roll more in the wind.
- Visit the Acropolis at opening time or late afternoon to avoid heat and groups.
- A quad or small car is the best way to explore the islands.
Indicative prices per person per day, excluding flights. Always check current entry requirements before travelling.
