Dubrovnik: 4 Days in the Pearl of the Adriatic
Medieval walls kissing the intense blue sea, marble streets shining in the sun, and real Game of Thrones locations await you in Croatia.
Introduction
Dubrovnik is a city that seems unreal until you see it with your own eyes. Its orange walls surround an old town of white marble that shines over the turquoise Adriatic. It's UNESCO heritage, a Game of Thrones location (King's Landing), and one of Europe's most photogenic destinations. But Dubrovnik is much more than Instagram: it's living history, from its founding as the Republic of Ragusa to its resistance during the 1991 siege. In 4 days we explored the walled city, visited nearby islands, and fell in love with Dalmatian gastronomy.
Day-by-day itinerary
Arrival and Old City walls
Arrival at Dubrovnik (airport or ferry from Split). Transfer to hotel inside or outside the walls. Afternoon: walk through the Old Town, Stradun (main marble street), Onofrio's Fountain, Franciscan Monastery. Climb the Walls (2km walk with spectacular views). Sunset from Fort Lovrijenac.
Lokrum Island and Game of Thrones sites
Morning: ferry to Lokrum (green island opposite Dubrovnik), botanical gardens, Benedictine monastery, rocky 'Dead Sea' beach, free-roaming peacocks. Afternoon: Game of Thrones location tour (Fortress of Bokar, Dominican Monastery Gardens, Pile Gate). Dinner at harbor-view restaurant.
Excursion to Kotor or Mostar
Full day excursion. Option A: Kotor (Montenegro, 2h by car), deepest bay in the Mediterranean, medieval walled city, climb to Fortress of San Giovanni. Option B: Mostar (Bosnia, 2.5h), historic Stari Most bridge, Ottoman market, Kravice waterfalls. We chose Kotor.
Museums and Dalmatian farewell
Morning: Cable car to Mount Srd (panoramic views of Dubrovnik and islands), Balkan War Museum at Imperial Fortress. Afternoon: Rector's Palace, Cathedral (treasury with gold relics), final walk through streets. Farewell with fresh seafood at buza restaurant (cave-sea).

Practical tips
- Book wall entry online: in summer queues are endless.
- Cruise ships disembark thousands of tourists 8am-5pm. Plan visits outside those hours.
- Bring comfortable footwear: marble streets are slippery and there are constant stairs.
- Cable car closes in strong wind: have plan B if it's a priority.
- Buy Dubrovnik Card if visiting 3+ museums: includes walls and transport.
- Tap water is drinkable but tastes of chlorine. Buy bottles if you're sensitive.
- Don't walk outside the walls at night without a guide: some areas still unreconstructed post-war.
- Banje beach (outside Pile Gate) is overcrowded. Seek Sveti Jakov or walkway to fortress.
