Morocco travel guide

Morocco is a short flight from Europe and feels like another world: labyrinthine medinas, the Atlas, the Sahara and hospitality you feel in every riad.

When to go

March to May and October to November are ideal for combining cities and desert. In summer the interior and desert easily top 40 °C, and winter nights in the Sahara and Atlas are very cold. Check the Ramadan dates, which change every year: travel is fine, but hours and pace change.

How much it costs

  • Backpacker: €35–50 a day.
  • Mid-range: €70–110 a day (charming riad, private tours).
  • High-end: €200+ a day.

The 3-day trip from Marrakech to Merzouga with a night in a desert camp is the usual way to reach the Sahara.

Suggested 10-day route

Marrakech (3 days) → Aït Ben Haddou and the Dadès gorges (1 day) → Merzouga desert (2 days) → Fez (2 days) → Chefchaouen (1 day) → fly home from Fez or Tangier (1 day). The Al Boraq high-speed train links Tangier, Rabat and Casablanca.

Practical tips

  • Check the entry requirements for your passport before booking.
  • Dirhams can't be bought abroad: exchange or use ATMs on arrival.
  • Bargaining is normal in the souks; agree taxi and guide prices before starting.
  • Cover shoulders and knees away from the beach areas.

Indicative prices per person per day, excluding flights. Always check current entry requirements before travelling.
