Mexico is vast and varied: Latin America's most vibrant capital, colonial towns, a cuisine on UNESCO's heritage list, Mayan ruins and cenotes by the Caribbean.

When to go

The dry season, November to April, is best for most of the country. Caribbean hurricane season runs June to November, with the highest risk from August to October, and sargassum seaweed often reaches Riviera Maya beaches between spring and summer.

How much it costs

  • Backpacker: €40–60 a day.
  • Mid-range: €90–140 a day.
  • High-end: €250+ a day (Tulum and Cancún are far pricier).

Suggested 14-day route

Mexico City (4 days, with Teotihuacán) → Oaxaca (3 days) → fly to Mérida and Yucatán (3 days, with Chichén Itzá and cenotes) → Bacalar or Tulum (4 days). ADO buses are comfortable and reliable between cities; for long distances, domestic flights save a lot of time.

Practical tips

  • Check the entry requirements for your passport; keep the entry record immigration gives you.
  • In the city use app taxis or official taxi ranks, not street taxis.
  • Drink bottled or filtered water.
  • A 10–15% tip is customary in restaurants.

Indicative prices per person per day, excluding flights. Always check current entry requirements before travelling.
