Thailand is the perfect gateway to Southeast Asia: golden temples, world-class street food, mountains in the north and turquoise islands in the south, all at excellent value.

When to go

November to February is the coolest, driest time for Bangkok, the north and the Andaman coast (Krabi, Phuket, Koh Lanta). The Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) get their heaviest rain from October to December, so they are a good summer alternative. March and April are very hot.

How much it costs

  • Backpacker: €30–45 a day.
  • Mid-range: €70–110 a day.
  • High-end: €200+ a day (island resorts).

Suggested 15-day route

Bangkok (3 days) → Chiang Mai (3 days, with a Chiang Rai or mountain trip) → fly to Krabi (2 days) → Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi (4 days) → back to Bangkok (1 day) plus 2 spare days. Domestic flights are cheap and save long overnight journeys.

Practical tips

  • Check the current visa-exemption length for your passport before travelling.
  • Temples and the Grand Palace require covered shoulders and knees.
  • Use Grab or Bolt in cities and agree tuk-tuk prices before getting in.
  • Skip elephant riding; choose no-riding sanctuaries.

Indicative prices per person per day, excluding flights. Always check current entry requirements before travelling.
