France goes far beyond Paris: Loire châteaux, Provençal light, the Riviera and some of Europe's best trains to tie it all together.
When to go
May, June and September are ideal: good weather and reasonable prices. Provence lavender blooms from late June to late July. August is peak season on the coast and many local Paris businesses close for the holidays.
How much it costs
- Backpacker: €75–95 a day (more in Paris).
- Mid-range: €150–220 a day.
- High-end: €350+ a day.
Lunch set menus (formule déjeuner) are usually much cheaper than dinner at the same restaurant.
Suggested 10-day route
Paris (4 days) → Loire Valley (2 days) → TGV to Avignon and Provence (2 days) → Nice and the Riviera (2 days). The TGV links Paris with Avignon in about 2h40 and with Nice in about 5h30.
Practical tips
- The Louvre and the Eiffel Tower run on timed slots: book online.
- Service is included in the bill; tipping is optional.
- For the Loire and Provence, renting a car for a few days gives far more freedom.
Indicative prices per person per day, excluding flights. Always check current entry requirements before travelling.
