Slovenia in 8 Days: Bled, Triglav and the Adriatic Coast

Slovenia is the country everyone skips on the way to Croatia, and that's its great secret. 🇸🇮 Eight days driving between alpine lakes, turquoise gorges and a Venetian town on the Adriatic.

Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge

Bled is Slovenia's postcard: an island with a bell tower in a glacial lake and a castle clinging to a cliff. And yes, it's even better in person.

We hiked up to the Ojstrica viewpoint at sunrise (20 steep minutes) and had the classic view entirely to ourselves.

You reach the island by pletna, the traditional rowed boat. Ringing the wishing bell inside the church is the compulsory local ritual.

Vintgar Gorge, 15 minutes away by car, is 1.6 km of wooden walkways over turquoise water. Book a time slot online: capacity has been strictly limited since 2023.

Bohinj, Triglav and the Soča Valley

Bohinj is Bled without the tourists: a bigger, wilder lake surrounded by Triglav National Park. We rented a kayak and saw nobody for an hour.

Savica waterfall, at the head of the valley, drops 78 metres out of a cave. It's 500 steps and worth every one.

The Vršič pass, with its 50 cobbled hairpins, crosses the Julian Alps into the Soča valley. One of Europe's most beautiful roads; open May to October only.

The Soča river is an emerald colour that looks edited. We rafted in Bovec and wanted to do it again the next day.

Ljubljana and Piran

Ljubljana is a pocket capital: 300,000 people, a pedestrian centre and the Ljubljanica river lined with terraces. One long day to see it, two to enjoy it.

Plečnik's central market on Saturdays and the funicular up to the castle make the perfect morning.

Piran, on Slovenia's tiny coastline, is a miniature Venetian town. Wandering at dusk out to the lighthouse point and watching the sun set over the Adriatic closes the trip perfectly.

On the way, Postojna or Škocjan caves: we chose Škocjan for its underground canyon, less commercial and far more impressive.

**Best time:** June to September for the Alps; May and October to dodge crowds.
