Maldives: A Week in Paradise Over Water

Our journey began at Barcelona Airport heading to Qatar, and from there to the Maldives (Malé International). The total flight time is approximately 13 hours. We recommend choosing a Middle Eastern airline for the entire itinerary. We flew with Qatar Airways and the service was impeccable: comfortable seats, first-class entertainment, and gastronomy that turns flight hours into part of the experience. The layover in Doha allowed us to stretch our legs in one of the world's most luxurious airports. Its indoor gardens, designer shops, and dreamy lounges make the wait fly by.

For this unique experience, we chose a 92m² Overwater Villa at the Lux South Ari Atoll, a resort awarded by Forbes magazine in 2024 as one of the best in the world. Waking up every morning with the Indian Ocean beneath your feet is indescribable. The villa features direct sea access from a private terrace, glass floors to observe marine life, and an outdoor bathtub with infinite horizon views. The resort offers unique experiences: snorkeling with manta rays, romantic beach dinners, overwater spa, and cuisine that fuses local flavors with international signature cooking.

⚠️ Important note: Since most islands in the Maldives are private, it's not easy to move between them. Once the booking was confirmed, we contacted the hotel to arrange the transfer from Malé International Airport to Lux South Ari Atoll. We advise not arriving later than 4:00 PM in Malé, as you risk missing the last transfers of the day. And since at Odysseus we do everything big... we chose to arrive by seaplane! 🚁 Seeing the islands from the air is an experience that cannot be described in words. The turquoise blue of the sea, the coral rings, the small deserted islands... It's like flying over an impressionist painting. The 30-minute flight goes by in a flash, but the views stay with you forever.

The Maldives is much more than sun loungers and cocktails (although that's also very nice). During our week we explored: **Snorkeling with whale sharks**: South Ari Atoll is one of the best places in the world to swim alongside these gentle giants. An experience that changes your perspective on the ocean. **Night diving with manta rays**: Under the resort lights, dozens of mantas feed on plankton every night. Floating alongside them is hypnotic. **Traditional sunset fishing**: We joined local fishermen on their traditional boats. What we caught, we had for dinner prepared by the resort chef. **Local island excursion**: Getting to know the real life of Maldivians, beyond resort luxury, connects you with their culture and warmth.

After living this experience, here are our tips: **Best time**: November to April is the dry season. The weather is perfect and the sea crystal clear. **Visa**: Spanish citizens don't need a visa for stays up to 30 days. **Currency**: The Maldivian rufiyaa is official, but US dollars are accepted at all resorts. **Tips**: Many resorts include a service charge, but additional tips are always welcome. **Luggage**: Pack light clothing, reef-safe sunscreen (the reefs will thank you!), and water shoes for snorkeling. **WiFi**: Most resorts have good WiFi, but we recommend disconnecting and enjoying paradise.
