Krakow: History, Culture and Pierogi in 5 Days

Krakow is Poland's medieval gem: a huge market square, a royal castle above the Vistula, the best nightlife in Eastern Europe and a history that moves you. 🇵🇱 Here's how we spent 5 intense days in Poland's former capital.

Stare Miasto: Europe's Most Beautiful Old Town

The Rynek Główny (Main Market Square) is the largest medieval square in Europe: 40,000 m² surrounded by palaces, churches and the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall), where amber and salt have been traded since the 14th century.

Every hour, a trumpeter plays the Hejnał from the tower of St. Mary's Basilica. The melody stops abruptly, remembering the medieval trumpeter struck by a Mongol arrow while alerting the city.

The basilica's interior left us breathless: Veit Stoss's altarpiece, carved from linden wood over 12 years, is the largest Gothic artwork in the world.

We walked along Floriańska Street, the royal route connecting St. Florian's Gate with Wawel, lined with centuries-old cafés and art galleries.

Wawel Castle and Kazimierz

Wawel, the royal hill above the Vistula, is Poland's soul. The Renaissance castle houses the Sigismund tapestry collection and the Dragon's Den, where legend says Krakow's dragon once lived.

Wawel Cathedral, where Polish kings were crowned and buried, contains the Sigismund Bell (1520), Poland's largest. Climbing it takes effort but the views are worth it.

Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter, has transformed into Krakow's most bohemian neighborhood. Centuries-old synagogues coexist with basement cafés, art galleries and the city's best bars.

Schindler's Factory, now a museum, tells the story of Nazi-occupied Krakow. It's an intense and necessary experience. Book in advance.

Auschwitz and Wieliczka Salt Mine

Visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau is the most overwhelming experience of the trip. No words do justice to what you feel walking through the camp where over a million people died. It's a duty of memory.

Book the guided tour months in advance and prepare emotionally. The visit lasts approximately 3.5 hours and transport from Krakow is simple (1.5 hours by bus).

Wieliczka Salt Mine, a World Heritage Site, is the perfect counterpoint: 300 km of underground galleries excavated since the 13th century, with salt-carved chapels, underground lakes and the extraordinary Chapel of St. Kinga.

We descended 135 meters deep and St. Kinga's Chapel, with its salt crystal chandeliers and sculptures, feels like an otherworldly underground cathedral.
