Costa Rica: Volcanoes, Jungle and Beaches in 12 Days

Costa Rica is the definition of Pura Vida: active volcanoes, jungles where toucans fly overhead and beaches where turtles nest under the stars. 🇨🇷 Here's how we organized 12 days in Central America's green paradise.

San José and the Central Valley

We landed in San José and used the first day to explore the Central Valley. The Central Market is an explosion of flavors: casados (the typical dish), gallo pinto and the best tropical fruit juices we've ever tasted.

We visited the National Museum, housed in a former military barracks (Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948), and the National Theater, a 19th-century architectural gem.

An hour from the capital, Poás Volcano treated us to a turquoise crater wrapped in clouds. Arrive early (before 8:00 AM) to avoid clouds blocking the view.

La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano

La Fortuna is Costa Rica's adventure heartland. Arenal Volcano dominates the landscape with its perfect cone, and the area offers activities for every taste.

We did a nighttime jungle tour where we saw red-eyed tree frogs, snakes and sleeping sloths. Tabacón hot springs, naturally heated by the volcano, are the perfect relaxation after a day of adventure.

La Fortuna Waterfall requires descending (and climbing) 500 steps, but the natural pool at the base of the 70-meter cascade is absolutely worth every step.

We crossed the Mistico hanging bridges above the treetops. Walking 60 meters above the tropical forest is a breathtaking experience.

Monteverde: The Cloud Forest

Monteverde is another world. The cloud forest, wrapped in perpetual mist, harbors astonishing biodiversity: over 400 bird species, 100 mammal species and thousands of plants.

The canopy tour (zip lines) above the treetops is pure adrenaline. The longest one stretches 750 meters and flies over a valley at 100 meters high.

We found the legendary quetzal, the sacred bird of the Maya, with its tail of iridescent feathers. Our guide had been searching for them for 20 years and knew exactly where to look.

The night reserve allowed us to see tarantulas, kinkajous and the elusive olingo. The jungle at night sounds completely different.
