The Lyall
5 stars
16 Murphy Street, 16, SOUTH YARRA

About the hotel
Set in the leafy suburb of South Yarra, one of Melbourne's most prestigious addresses, is The Lyall. A boutique hotel whose name was whispered amongst those who favour discretion, it was refurbished in 2024 by architecture firm, DKO, taking inspiration from the European pied-à-terre. Only 51 rooms and suites are found here, most with Juliette balconies and sun terraces that look out onto the picturesque street or the Paul Bangay-designed Japanese garden within. It is a hotel with a different character - a sophisticated, serene lobby reminiscent of a living room, with a fireplace, Tom Dixon furniture, and a view into the garden that encourages slowing down and unwinding. A cafe with seating on the terrace to take in the neighbourhood, and balconies that can be set for lunch or dinner in-room/suite. It is an atmosphere that carries through the hotel, an art of relaxed living, with chaises, generous walk-in robes, and deep bathtubs in the higher room categories. The idea, to settle into a private home, where the neighbourhood and Lekker bikes are on the doorstep.
